This project was one of our most successful marketing campaigns ever.
Our task was to build a top-of-the-line e-commerce site, with logistics and automation to manage their large amount of online sales and over 1,500 product variations.
Before doing this project, we might have guessed that we were great Shopify developers, but now everyone on the team is convinced that we are world class.
Here's a behind-the-scenes look into how we pulled it off.

The goal of this Shopify site was to provide an entertaining, visually-stimulative user experience. We also took a “less is more” approach, so customers easily find their way to the checkout line.
WHAT WE LOVED ABOUT THE PROJECT:
We love a good challenge. Finding a great solution that showcased the product, created an alluring lifestyle element, provided valuable technical information, yet remained clean and beautiful was a fun challenge for our team. The products themselves are beautiful, and the nature of the industry allowed us to flex our creative and strategic muscles. Our team had to collaborate even more closely than normal between the client, and our design, development, and strategy departments in order to create a customized, cohesive website product that was both beautiful and seamlessly functional.
Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH JCI?
A: I was looking for smart people to think, execute, and be creative. Other agencies will say “Okay, whatever you want.” But JCI offered a strong, expert opinion instead of only listening to what I had to say. I respect that.
Q: WHAT STANDS OUT AS A STRENGTH OF THE SITE?
A: One of our core values is the amplification and enhancement of color–bringing visuals to a new level. Shannon took that idea then designed the site to be colorful and engaging. It’s the perfect reflection of what we do in terms of product delivery.
Q: WHAT FEEDBACK HAVE YOU RECEIVED FROM CUSTOMERS ABOUT THE SITE?
A: We have a technical product, but now customers across the board say it’s easily digestible. Our last website was overbearing. The team did an excellent job distilling down to the critical elements, without losing any value.
Q: HOW'S BUSINESS BEEN SINCE THE SITE LAUNCHED?
A: Business has been very good right out of the gate. Since we launched the Shopify site, we have seen a 75% lift in our online sales. Everyone has loved the delivery of the site. It’s spot on for what we wanted.
Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE PILLA AS A CLIENT?
A: Well there’s two answers to this, because this is actually the second website we’ve built for him. The first time was because I could immediately tell he was a go-getter entrepreneur with high-level communication skills. That’s my kind of guy. Then the first site was so successful, he needed logistics and automation to manage the large amount of sales. We chose to do business again, this time rebuilding the site on Shopify.
Q: WHAT WAS UNIQUE ABOUT CREATING THE PILLA SITE? WHAT MADE IT SPECIAL?
A: Philip’s products involve a ton of technology and innovation, stuff that doesn’t exist in his competitor’s products. We had to accurately show the difference in lenses, all while looking at a computer screen. This took an immense amount of study, and Philip even sent us $120,000 worth of sunglasses so we could digitally mimic each lens perfectly.
Q: WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF LOOKING AT THE FINAL PRODUCT?
A: First, that Philip Pilla chose us a second time. Second, that we were able to bring a no compromise, top shelf, e-commerce solution, to a high-end luxury product... and while building on a proven platform such as Shopify, instead of castrating our client by saying it only could be done on a fully custom-coded site. This is a badass Shopify site.
Q: ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?
A: I talk to so many people who borrow large amounts of money to buy truckloads of product to store in a warehouse, but then gasp at the price of a proper website (which would empty that warehouse every other month). This project proved that spending the money on an ideal e-commerce site is NOT the risk so many consider it to be. Not having the right site is the risk.
One night on his talk show, Jimmy Fallon was bantering with Alec Baldwin about sunglasses. Next thing you know, Jimmy pulls out a pair of Pilla sunglasses from behind his desk and puts them on. They end up talking about the glasses for a minute and a half–and you couldn't have written a better script for what they had to say.
